چکیده

Three experiments using the Visual Fixation Procedure were carried out to investigate Dutch-learning 7-montholds’ ability to discriminate voices in a familiar versus unfamiliar language. In all three experiments, infants were habitutated to 3 female voices in one language and then tested on a new female voice in the habituated language (Voice-Change Trials) and a new female voice in a new language (Voice-Plus–Language-Change Trials). In Experiment 1 (Dutch versus Japanese) and Experiment 2 (Italian versus Japanese), infants dishabituated to VoicePlus-Language-Change Trials. But only Dutch-habituated infants in Experiment 1 dishabituated to Voice-Change Trials. A third experiment using backwards speech ruled out the possibility that the Dutch speakers were simply more variable in voice quality than the Italian and Japanese speakers. These results replicate earlier work demonstrating that infants can discriminate rhythmically-distinct languages. In addition, this study provides the first ever evidence that infants are more sensitive to voice changes in their native language than in an unfamiliar language.

Language Discrimination by English-Learning 5-Month-Olds: Effects of Rhythm and Familiarity

Six experiments using the headturn preference procedure investigated 5-month-old American infants’ ability to discriminate languages. The impetus for the present study was a report that newborns discriminate languages across, but not within, rhythmic classes (Nazzi et al., 1998). Two experiments verified that at 5 months, infants still discriminate pairs of languages from different rhythmic cla...

Infant Dialect Discrimination

In order to understand speech, infants must differentiate between phonetic changes that are linguistically contrastive and those that are not. Research has shown that infants are very sensitive to fine-grained differences in speech sounds that differentiate words in their own or another language. However, little is known about infants’ ability to discriminate phonetic differences associated wit...

Brain Responses in 4-Month-Old Infants Are Already Language Specific

Language is the most important faculty that distinguishes humans from other animals. Infants learn their native language fast and effortlessly during the first years of life, as a function of the linguistic input in their environment. Behavioral studies reported the discrimination of melodic contours [1] and stress patterns [2, 3] in 1-4-month-olds. Behavioral [4, 5] and brain measures [6-8] ha...

Modified spectral tilt affects infants' native-language discrimination of approximants and vowels.

This study's aim was to determine if 6- and 9-month-old infants discriminate approximants and vowels when the spectral shape is modified to emphasize high- or low-frequency information. Infants were presented with /r/-/l/ and /ɔ/-/ɐ/ in three conditions: (a) unmodified; (b) -6 dB/octave tilt; and (c) +6 dB/octave tilt. Six-month-olds discriminated /ɔ/-/ɐ/ in conditions (a) and (b), and /r/-/l/ ...

Familiarity, expertise, and change detection: change deafness is worse in your native language.

We first replicated the language-familiarity effect for voice discrimination and found better voice discrimination in familiar languages. However, when listeners were not cued to listen for changes, both English and Spanish speakers exhibited greater change deafness in their familiar language. Results suggest that lexical/semantic attention in a familiar language and increased indexical process...
